The Tallis Scholars were founded in 1973 by their director, Peter Phillips. With over 35 recordings and well over 1000 concert performances, they have established themselves as leading exponents of Renaissance sacred music, and their exploration of the depth and variety of this repertoire has reached a world-wide audience. Despite having sung to capacity audiences in major concert venues throughout the world, this is the group's first appearance in Brighton with their most popular programme.

The programme celebrates music written for the Sistine chapel, including the famous Allegri Miserere and music by Palestrina and Soriano. There is a particular link between the Tallis Scholars and the music of the Sistine Chapel; in April 1994 the group enjoyed the privilege of performing in the Chapel to mark the final stage of the complete restoration of the Michelangelo frescoes.
