Title: Franz Schubert's Song Cycle: Wintereise with Canadian Baritone Russell Braun
Promoted by: Rudi Martinus van Dijk Foundation
Time: Friday, 5 December 2008, at 7:30pm
Place: Vinehall School Theatre, Robertsbridge
Description: Canadian Baritone Russell Braun sings Schubert's Winterreise

"A searching musician, Braun also has one of the world's most beautiful baritone voices. He brings a poet's soul and a young man's bewildered grief to Schubert's shattering cycle of solitude and loss." (New York's Newsday)

"One is struck first by the sheer beauty of his voice; it has much the same warmth and honeyed sheen of Fischer-Dieskau's but with a darker and more burnished sound." (American Record Guide)

Currently singing the role of Papageno in Die Zauberflöte at l'Opéra National de Paris, Canadian opera and lieder sensation Russell Braun makes a special appearance at the Vinehall School Theatre. Whether at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, l’Opéra de Paris, the State Opera in Vienna, Lyric Opera in Chicago , Los Angeles Opera, La Scala in Milan, or the Salzburg and Glyndebourne Festivals, the international stages of the world are his.

Russell Braun is joined at Vinehall Scool Theatre by Canadian pianist Carolyn Maule as they generously donate their time to support The Rudi Martinus van Dijk Foundation. Their 2005 CD of Schubert’s haunting song cycle Winterreise has been showered with accolades.

"...a mellifluous, musical and strongly felt interpretation... Braun's unpretentiously moving singing is supported with articulate sensitivity and fine, clear tone by pianist Carolyn Maule…." (Opera News, January 2006).

During his lifetime, the Dutch Canadian composer Rudi Martinus van Dijk understood the unifying quality of music. The Rudi Martinus van Dijk Foundation is a registered charity founded in 2006 to raise funds for scholarships to support young composers and conductors from war torn or economically deprived areas around the world. All proceeds from the concert will be used to further the aims and goals of The Rudi Martinus van Dijk Foundation.

Join us for an unforgettable evening of music making. All are cordially invited to the post-concert wine reception and to meet the artists.
