Title: Meditative choral music from the Baltic States
Performed by: Choir of Royal Holloway, University of London
Time: Friday, 19 November 2010, at 7:30pm
Place: Arundel Cathedral, Arundel
Description: Choral music is an integral part of cultural life in all the Baltic States and at the core of national identity. It is therefore no wonder that such an array of music has been produced by composers from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, increasingly so in recent years. During Soviet occupation Eastern Europe remained isolated from international trends in contemporary music and the performance and composition of church music was banned. As a result the three nations have since developed an individual musical voice producing music that is highly spiritual, meditative and exotically beautiful.

Under the direction of Rupert Gough the Choir of Royal Holloway, consisting of 24 choral scholars, has grown from strength to strength and now comprises of some of the brightest and promising young choral singers. The choir, recently described by The Times as “truly fabulous and breathtakingly musical” is rapidly becoming recognised as one of the finest collegiate choirs in Britain.

The Choir of Royal Holloway is developing a reputation for its exploration of new Baltic music having recently released a disc on Hyperion Records of music of Lithuanian composer Vytautas Miškinis. The Choir’s previous release by Latvian composer Rihards Dubra, received high critical acclaim, and is regularly played on Classic FM.
