Place: St Michael & All Angels Church, Lancing
Description: The Boundstone Chorus are joined by the Sinfonia of Arun for a performance of Symphony 40 in G Minor by Mozart, Mass in G by Schubert and Mass in C by Beethoven conducted by Aedan Kerney MBE.

The Mass No. 2 in G Major was written within the space of five days, March 2-7, 1815. This is the shortest and simplest of Schubert's seven masses, intended for performance in his parish church of Lichenthal. The chamber instrumentation for strings is a beautifully transparent setting for use in a small church with limited resources. The Mass setting is restrained and conservative, reminiscent of Mozart or early Beethoven. It contains those portions of the Ordinary of the Mass that are most frequently set to music - Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Angus Dei - in the original Latin.

Probably one of the least often performed of Beethoven's larger works his Mass in C was composed for the birthday of Princess Maria Hermengild Esterhazy in 1807. The composer conducted a private first performance of the Mass in Eisenstadt in September of that year in the presence of Princess Maria and Prince Nicolaus Esterhazy. Famously the Prince didn’t like the music but it would appear that his ear was at fault and not the music as it has gone on to be recognised as a good illustration of Beethoven’s genius as one of the pre-eminent composers in the classical genre.

Described by Wagner as a “work of indestructible beauty” Mozart wrote his Symphony No. 40 in G minor in 1788. It is one of only two minor key symphonies Mozart wrote (the other is in G minor as well). The composition occupied an exceptionally productive period of just a few weeks in 1788, during which time he also completed the 39th and 41st symphonies. Although interpretations differ, the symphony is unquestionably one of Mozart's most greatly admired works, and it is frequently performed and recorded.

The Boundstone Chorus are pleased and excited to be bringing a concert repertoire of such great pieces of music to be performed in the Adur Festival.
