Description: | Johan de Cock was born in 1975 in Namibia (South West Africa). He studied piano with Catharina Struthers and harpsichord / pipe organ with Boudewijn Scholten at the University of Stellen-bosch, South Africa from 1994 - 1996. During this time, he held an assistant accompanist's post at the university, and was awarded the Pieter de Villier's prize for piano accompaniment in 1995. He made his debut at the City Hall in Cape Town in 1996, playing Liszt's Totentanz with the Cape Phil-harmonic Orchestra, conducted by Gérhard Kor-sten, and then went on to work for many years in South Africa as a pianist, organist, vocal accompa-nist, composer, arranger and musical director for theatre shows and cabaret. He moved to the UK in October 2000, where he has made his home ever since. Johan soon established himself in London as a pianist, music producer, remixer, and vocal accompanist. Some of his electronic tracks were used for Free Spirit, a series of short ac-tion videos broadcast on ITV and C4 in the UK. He has also released music on the Afrimusiek (South Africa) and DPulse (USA) record labels, as well as on his own record label, EIAG Records. In 2005 he was commissioned by St Ethelburga's Centre for Reconciliation and Peace to compose a new Christmas work, Stargazing, for soprano, piano, electronics and video. It was premiered on 13 De-cember 2005, and excerpts were broadcast on BBC London Radio. In the UK, Johan has performed as a solo pianist in Salcombe (Devon), Chichester Cathe-dral, the Chapel Royal, the Brighton Unitarian Church, Brighton Friends' Meeting House, St Mary's in Kemp Town, the Brighton Fringe Festival, the Under Ground Theatre in Eastbourne, Holy Trinity Church in Hastings, and St Anne's Church in Lewes. In London, Johan has performed at St- Sepulchre-without-Newgate, St Ethelburga's Centre for Peace and Reconcilliation, St Martin-within-Ludgate, St Bride's in Fleet Street, Steinway Hall, the Schott Recital Room, the Burgh House and Hampstead Museum, Pizza on the Park, the London Arena, the Richmond Concert Society, Bartok in Camden (where he held a three-year residency), the Battersea Barge, the Soho Actors' Centre, and the Leytonstone Festival A champion of modern music, Johan has premiered and performed many works by con-temporary composers including South African composers, Arnold van Wyk, Peter Klat-zow, Arthur Wegelin, Johan Cloete and Bongani Ndodana-Breen; as well as international composers, Frederick Stocken (UK), Stephan Beneking (Germany), Juan María Solare (Argentina), R.A. Moulds (USA) and Donald Thomson (Scotland). More recently, he has taken piano lessons with Angela Lear and Graham Fitch in London and studied music pedagogy with the British organist and composer, Frederick Stocken. Johan currently lives in Saltdean, Brighton in East Sussex, where he teaches from his home studio, composes and organises a variety of musical concerts and events.
