Time: | Friday, 12 July 2019, at 7:30pm |
Place: | Arundel Cathedral, Arundel |
Description: | Following the successes of his three-concert Franck series and then the closing concert in the Arundel Festival last year, the illustrious musician D’Arcy Trinkwon returns to play the great music of four of the towering 19th century composers – Brahms, Schumann, Mendelssohn and Liszt - on the famous 1873 Hill organ in Arundel Cathedral. This series presents a unique chance to hear the works of these four musical giants in one series; it is believed to be the first time that these works have all been heard in a series in the UK. Each of the four concerts concentrates on the complete or major organ works of each composer: July 12: MENDELSSOHN - Complete sonatas and preludes & fugues Three Preludes & Fugues, Op.37 Six Sonatas Op.65 Mendelssohn – who almost single-handedly revived Europe’s interest in Bach (whose popularity had fallen so quickly after his death) and was a frequent visitor and performer in the British Isles where he was surely the most celebrated of all Victorian musicians: he was referred to as ‘the composer everyone loves’. He had a fascination with the organ and several times went to play for pleasure at St Paul’s Cathedral – an association through which the Preludes & Fugues to be heard today sprung. His sonatas were commissioned by the English publisher Coventry & Collier in 1844: in effect Mendelssohn revised and brushed-up many of the single pieces he had previously written assembling them into what he produced as ‘sonatas’. The ever-optimistic nature and vibrant energy of Mendelssohn are in full evidence in the more vigorous movements, his exquisitely expressive side in the reflective ones. “If you want to play with true feeling, you must listen to good singers. You will learn far more from them than from any players you are likely to meet with.” Mendelssohn July 26 – Liszt One of the distinguished musicians of his generation, D’Arcy Trinkwon performs worldwide and is acclaimed for his outstanding artistry. Renowned for his dedication to bring the organ and its music as a wide an audience as possible without the need for musical compromise: he is acclaimed for lifting audiences up – not for playing down to them. “D’Arcy Trinkwon... for anyone needing to be converted to organ music.” The Musical Times |
