Description: | Informal concert series performed/presented by internationally acclaimed University Organist, D'Arcy Trinkwon on the famous 1967 Grant, Degens & Bradbeer organ in the unviersity's Meeting House. For Halloween, a very rare opportunity to hear Petr Eben’s FAUST complete… A German magician who claimed to be in league with Satan, Faust astonished audiences in the early 1500s with remarkable and bizarre magic displays. After his death tales of his superhuman talents circulated, and as his cult grew, many a mythical deed of sorcerers and witches were attributed to him. The resulting legend was a Romantic writer’s gift, and the great German poet Goethe took up his quill in the epic drama which has since enshrined Faust’s name in an irresistible story of demon conjuring, evil spirits, a pact with Mephistopheles, and ultimately, of salvation. In 1976 the Czech composer Petr Eben (1929-2007) was commissioned by Vienna’s Burgtheater to write stage music to accompany Goethe’s play. He later made this adaption for organ solo in which he demanded the organ break new and unchartered ground in colour, technique and poetic imagery: his explores to these to their furthest limits and remains totally unique in the repertoire. There remains nothing even approaching the originality of this 9-movement work in its use of the organ and the evocation of the text that Eben conjures from it: the most bizarre, unearthly sounds depicting everything from Faust’s demon summoning, the hurdy-gurdy, the drunken students revelling, the taunting evil spirit in the cathedral, the witches’ Sabbath, the angels… |
